MUMBAI: Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday indicated he expected the central bank to ease rates while the government would do everything possible to check inflation and cut subsidies.
In his first remarks after being picked as the UPA candidate for the presidential elections, the finance minister admitted food inflation was high, saying the government would take measures on the supply side.
He also said that oil prices have started easing after 22 months and that he has requested state governments to cut taxes on fuel until crude eases to $90. The centre would also do its bit on the fuel tax front, he said.
